Maskbreak vs MaxMind minFraud

MaxMind minFraud scores a payment or account event from the data you send it: the IP address, email, card, billing and shipping details, phone and, with its tracking add-on, the device. Maskbreak checks the browser visit itself and answers allow, review or block, with the reasons: VPN, proxy, Tor, automation or a fake browser. minFraud is billed per query, from $0.005 on Score to $0.020 on Factors (September 2026 prices); Maskbreak has a Free plan of 10,000 visitor checks a month and paid plans from €29 a month. If you score orders and report chargebacks back, minFraud is built for that. If you want a verdict on the visitor at signup or login, without a card, start with Maskbreak. The two can also run side by side.

Last reviewed: September 2026. Every minFraud fact and price on this page was checked against MaxMind’s own material on 24 September 2026: the pricing page, the developer docs and release notes, and the support knowledge base, each linked where it is used. Maskbreak wrote this page about its own product, so read it as a vendor’s view; nobody benchmarked either API for it. Where a cell says “Not documented”, MaxMind’s public material is silent on it, which is not the same as minFraud lacking it. Prices move and volume discounts are negotiated, so confirm with MaxMind before you budget. Spotted a mistake? Email support@maskbreak.com.

minFraud scores the transaction. Maskbreak checks the visit.

Every minFraud call describes an event in your business. The request names the event type (account_creation, account_login, password_reset, payout_change, purchase and seven more) and carries whatever you know at that moment: the IP address and user agent, the email, the card, billing and shipping addresses, the phone, the order and up to 100 custom inputs of your own. minFraud answers with a risk_score from 0.01 to 99, which MaxMind defines as a probability: “a score of 20 indicates a 20% chance that a transaction is fraudulent”. Your custom rules turn that into accept, reject or manual review.

A Maskbreak call describes a visit. The script on your page collects two tokens from the browser, and your server sends them to POST /v1/evaluate with your API key. The answer is a decision (allow, review or block), a 0–100 risk_score and reasons such as vpn_detected, proxy_detected, automation_detected or antidetect_browser. It needs no card, address or order, so it works on a signup form before you know anything about the person. For the same reason it cannot judge a payment.

So the choice follows your data. At checkout you hold the card, the addresses and, weeks later, chargebacks to report back: that is minFraud’s ground. At signup and login you mostly hold a browser and an email address. minFraud scores those events too, from the IP, the email and, if you run its Device Tracking Add-On, a device ID. What its documentation does not describe is detection of fake browsers or automation, and that is the part Maskbreak was built for.

MaxMind minFraud pricing (September 2026)

MaxMind publishes per-query prices, so you can budget before talking to anyone. As of 24 September 2026 the minFraud pricing page lists three tiers, each billed per query from prepaid credit. The per-10,000 column is our arithmetic at list price, before any volume discount.

minFraud tier and what it returns Per query Per 10,000 queries
minFraud Score
Overall risk score, IP risk score, custom rules and custom inputs
$0.005 $50
minFraud Insights
Adds IP risk reasons, GeoIP Insights data, VPN and proxy flags with the provider’s name, email, address, phone and financial-institution checks, and a Device ID. MaxMind describes it as “over 80 data points”.
$0.015 $150
minFraud Factors
Adds risk score reasons: why the overall score came out as it did
$0.020 $200

How you pay. Credit is bought up front, in preset amounts of $25, $50, $100 or $250 or any whole-dollar amount from $20 to $25,000, and the same balance also pays for MaxMind’s GeoIP web services. The page promises “No Commitment” and “No Minimums”; volume discounts go through MaxMind’s sales team. All three tiers take the same request, and you change tier by calling a different endpoint URL, so starting on Score and moving up later costs no rework.

What it adds up to. Every scored event is one query. A shop that screens 20,000 orders a month on Insights pays $300 at list price. Score its signups and logins as well, say another 60,000 events, and the monthly bill becomes $1,200. Pick the tier with care: the VPN and proxy flags, the provider’s name and the email and address checks come back on Insights and Factors, not on the $0.005 Score tier.

Trying it. MaxMind offers a free trial of up to 1,000 queries on request. There is no ongoing free tier, and the sandbox is for integration tests only: it needs a paid account, and its data “is not accurate and should not be used to evaluate the efficacy of the minFraud scoring engine”. The free MaxMind data people often have in mind is GeoLite (country, city and ASN, 1,000 web-service lookups a day per service), which has no minFraud scoring and no proxy data. We found no separate published price for the Device Tracking Add-On.

Maskbreak
Free to start

Free plan: 10,000 visitor checks a month (up to 1,000 an hour), every signal included, no card. Paid plans from €29 a month (Starter, 50,000 checks) to €299 a month (Scale, 1,000,000); Enterprise from €990 a month. Prices exclude VAT.

MaxMind minFraud
$0.005–$0.020 / query

Pay as you go from prepaid credit: Score $0.005, Insights $0.015, Factors $0.020. Free trial of up to 1,000 queries on request; volume discounts through sales.

Maskbreak’s prices are on /pricing. Visitor checks count against a calendar-month allowance; bare IP lookups have their own, ten times the plan’s checks (100,000 a month on Free), and GET /v1/usage shows your usage. If you run an approved public-interest organisation, the cap comes off.

What is MaxMind minFraud?

minFraud is MaxMind’s fraud-scoring web service: you send a transaction or account event (IP, email, card, addresses, device) and get back a risk score from 0.01 to 99, in three tiers: Score, Insights and Factors. MaxMind, Inc. was founded in 2002 by Thomas “TJ” Mather and is privately held, based in Malden, Massachusetts (Wikipedia). It is the company behind the GeoIP geolocation data and says 100,000+ businesses rely on its data. minFraud followed in 2004. Two naming notes, because they trip up searches. MaxMind now says GeoIP and GeoLite where it used to say GeoIP2 and GeoLite2; the old names survive in library and package names. And “minFraud Legacy” is a separate, older web service, not the Score, Insights and Factors API compared on this page.

The current API is far from frozen. This is what the release notes record since the start of 2025:

2025
  • February: risk score reasons leave beta, returned by the API on Factors
  • June: a new reason for recently created email domains
  • November: an anonymizer object with confidence, last-seen date and the VPN or proxy provider’s name, plus a historical IP risk snapshot
  • December: email-domain classification, risk and volume outputs; new event types for credit applications, fund transfers and SIM swaps
2026
  • February: custom inputs raised to 100 on every tier
  • May: email addresses and phone numbers hashed before storage; native Android and iOS device-tracking SDKs; a new clear tag for reported transactions
  • July: a residential-proxy sub-object with its own confidence, last-seen date and provider name
  • August: probe-based residential-proxy risk built into the real-time IP risk score, with no integration change needed
Where minFraud is strong
  • It sees the transaction: card, billing and shipping addresses, phone and email, each checked on Insights and Factors. A visit check never sees any of it.
  • Residential-proxy data from active probing: MaxMind reports 300+ provider networks, 63M+ IPv4 addresses and 26M+ IPv6 /64 blocks (vendor figures), with a confidence score and the provider named
  • A feedback loop: the Report Transactions API takes chargeback, not_fraud, spam_or_abuse, suspected_fraud and clear tags, and MaxMind says reports help it catch more fraud and cut your false positives
  • Published per-query prices with no minimums, and published latency and uptime figures
  • Device tracking on the web, Android and iOS, matched by token rather than IP address
  • Custom rules and a manual-review disposition on every tier
Where minFraud is thinner
  • No documented detection of antidetect (fake) browsers
  • No documented bot, headless-browser or AI-agent detection, and no documented in-session behavioural signals
  • The cheapest tier returns an IP risk score, not the VPN and proxy flags or the provider’s name
  • Without the tracking add-on, devices are matched by IP address
  • No ongoing free tier; the sandbox needs a paid account, and MaxMind says its data is not accurate enough to judge the scoring
  • The e-commerce plugins are third-party, and MaxMind says it does not offer official support for them
  • No official MCP server documented (third-party wrappers exist)

Running Maskbreak and minFraud together

Because they read different evidence, the two do not fight over the same slot in your stack. A split that plays to each:

Moment Maskbreak minFraud
Signup Check the visit: fake browser, automation, proxy, VPN, disposable email, one device behind several of your accounts Optional: score account_creation from IP, email and, with the add-on, device ID
Login Check the visit for the automation and fake browsers behind credential stuffing Optional: score account_login
Checkout Check the visit first; refuse a block and pass the decision along Score the purchase with card, billing, shipping and email
Weeks later No chargeback feed; you can report a wrong verdict from the Events drawer Report chargebacks and false positives back

At signup. A multi-accounting farm opens its tenth account of the day. Each account gets its own profile in a fake browser such as Multilogin or AdsPower, and each profile its own residential proxy, so the address looks like a home broadband line and the browser looks brand new. There is no card yet, so minFraud would have the IP, the email and, if you run its Device Tracking Add-On, a device ID to work with, and Insights documents residential-proxy flags for addresses MaxMind’s probing has seen. Detecting the fake browser is the part its documentation does not cover. This is what the signup submit can return from Maskbreak.

Example response, selected fields: a fake browser behind a residential proxy.

{
  "decision": "block",
  "risk_score": 93,
  "reasons": ["proxy_detected", "antidetect_browser"],
  "network": {
    "vpn": false,
    "proxy": true,
    "datacenter": false,
    "tor": false,
    "service": "<proxy service, when known>"
  },
  "device": {
    "antidetect": true,
    "automation": false,
    "emulator": false,
    "tampering_score": 0.8
  }
}

The block comes from the proxy and the fake browser together, and under the default policy either one alone would have been enough, so the signup stops there and the account never reaches a checkout. Tor, automation and emulator signals block by default too. A VPN is treated more gently: with nothing else wrong, a VPN visitor is flagged for review, not blocked, since many honest users run one, so you might ask for an email confirmation instead of refusing. If your product sees it differently, set the action for most signals yourself on the console’s Rules tab. A rule changes the decision only for the signal it names, so setting VPN to allow still blocks a VPN visitor in a fake browser. When a rule does change the answer, the response keeps the engine’s own answer in engine_decision. Pass an accountId as well and the answer tells you when this browser already sits behind other accounts, counted inside your own account only, never across customers.

At checkout. Call Maskbreak before minFraud. A card-testing script submits your payment form over and over, usually from a headless browser or through a proxy pool, and every attempt your handler refuses on Maskbreak’s block is a minFraud query you do not pay for. The orders that pass go to minFraud with the transaction data. minFraud’s request takes up to 100 custom inputs, so Maskbreak’s decision and reasons can travel with the order.

Roll it out quietly first. In watch mode your code logs Maskbreak’s decision and carries on regardless; once the Events log matches what you expected, switch to enforce (the rollout guide walks through it). Keep minFraud for what Maskbreak leaves out: order scoring, card and address checks and the chargeback feedback loop. Maskbreak also has no cross-customer identity network, no manual review team and no KYC.

When to use minFraud, when to use Maskbreak

Use minFraud if...
  • You take card payments and want each order scored with card, address, phone and email checks
  • You will report chargebacks and false positives back and want your scoring to take them into account
  • You already buy GeoIP data from MaxMind and want one prepaid balance for both
  • You need device tracking inside native Android or iOS apps
  • You run Magento, WooCommerce, PrestaShop or Miva and want a ready-made plugin, accepting that it is third-party
Use Maskbreak if...
  • Your losses begin before checkout, with fake sign-ups, account takeover, multi-accounting or trial and bonus abuse
  • You need to know when the browser itself is fake or scripted, with that signal spelled out in the reasons
  • You want every answer explained, with reason codes on every call and no higher tier to buy to see them
  • You would rather measure your own traffic first: Free plan, no card, 10,000 visitor checks a month
  • Your product has no checkout at all: SaaS, fintech and gaming sign-ups use the same call

minFraud alternatives and competitors

People comparing minFraud usually want to replace one of two things, and the two lead to different shortlists.

Replacing the fraud scoring
Replacing MaxMind GeoIP data

Check it on your own connection

The live check on our homepage runs your own visit through the same pipeline as the API, with no signup. Switch a VPN on first and see what comes back. For a single address there is the free IP lookup, which covers Tor exits and published cloud ranges only; VPN and proxy verdicts, with the service named when known, need a live visit like the homepage check.

Free plan: 10,000 visitor checks a month, no card. Run it in watch mode for a week and compare its Events log with what minFraud flags at checkout.

FAQ

minFraud questions, answered

How much does MaxMind minFraud cost?

As of September 2026, MaxMind lists minFraud Score at $0.005 per query, minFraud Insights at $0.015 and minFraud Factors at $0.020, paid from prepaid credit ($20 to $25,000) with no commitment or minimum. Volume discounts go through MaxMind’s sales team. At list price, 10,000 queries cost $50 on Score, $150 on Insights and $200 on Factors. Prices can change, so check MaxMind’s pricing page before you budget.

Is there a free version of minFraud?

There is no ongoing free tier. MaxMind offers a free trial of up to 1,000 queries on request, and its sandbox, which needs a paid account, is for integration tests only: MaxMind says its data is not accurate. GeoLite, MaxMind’s free data, covers country, city and ASN lookups but has no minFraud scoring and no proxy data. Maskbreak’s Free plan includes 10,000 visitor checks a month with no card.

What is the difference between minFraud Score, Insights and Factors?

Score returns an overall risk score, an IP risk score and custom-rule dispositions. Insights adds IP risk reasons, GeoIP Insights data, VPN and proxy flags with the provider’s name, email, address, phone and financial-institution checks, and a Device ID. Factors adds risk score reasons that explain the overall score. All three take the same request, so moving up a tier means calling a different endpoint.

Does minFraud detect VPNs, residential proxies and bots?

On Insights and Factors, minFraud returns flags for anonymous VPNs, public and residential proxies, hosting providers and Tor exits, the provider’s name, and a residential-proxy confidence based on MaxMind’s active probing. On Score you get the IP risk score only. We found no documented detection of antidetect browsers, bots or AI agents. Maskbreak checks the browser on a live visit and returns automation_detected or antidetect_browser in its reasons.

Is Maskbreak an alternative to MaxMind GeoIP?

Not for geolocation. Maskbreak returns a country code with each check, not city-level location, and its bare-IP lookup covers Tor exits and cloud ranges only. It is an alternative for the fraud question at signup and login: is this visitor on a VPN or proxy, a bot or a fake browser. If you need GeoIP-style data, compare IP-data providers such as IPinfo or IP2Location instead.

Can I use Maskbreak and minFraud together?

Yes, and they fit different moments. Check the visit with Maskbreak at signup, login and the start of checkout, refuse what it blocks, then score the remaining orders with minFraud using card, billing and shipping data. minFraud accepts up to 100 custom inputs, so Maskbreak’s decision can travel with the order, and each attempt refused before the minFraud call is a query you do not pay for.
