Maskbreak vs other fraud detection APIs

Eight head-to-head comparisons, grouped by what each vendor sells. IPQS starts from IP reputation and adds email, phone and device checks; Kount and Forter centre on orders and chargebacks; Castle on signups and logins; Arkose Labs on challenging risky sessions. Maskbreak checks the live visit at signup, login or checkout and answers allow, review or block with the reasons; where it fits is below the vendor groups. Find the group that matches the job you need done, then open that comparison: each one says where the other tool is the better choice.

Last reviewed: September 2026. We make Maskbreak; how we write these comparisons says where the facts come from and how we check our bias. Replacing a tool rather than comparing two? See all alternatives guides.

IP reputation and per-query risk scores: IPQS and minFraud

Read these if you send an address, an email or an order to an API and want a score back. Both publish their prices, and both work from what you send them, with an optional device layer on top (browser tag and mobile SDKs: IPQS on its Enterprise plan, MaxMind as its Device Tracking Add-On). They are also the right tools when there is no browser at all: scoring server logs, batch lists or API traffic.

Replacing one of them instead? See IPQS alternatives and minFraud alternatives. We also keep guides for other IP-data vendors: IPinfo, proxycheck.io, GetIPIntel, vpnapi.io, IP2Location and AbuseIPDB. Why an address alone says less than a visit: proxy detection API vs IP lookup.

Device identification: Fingerprint

Fingerprint starts from one question: have we seen this device before, on the website or in the mobile apps? There is no head-to-head page for Fingerprint yet; the alternatives guide compares it with other options, Maskbreak among them.

Fraud platforms with scores, rules and review: Sift and SEON

Sift and SEON each score several kinds of abuse in one place and combine rules with machine-learning scores. Sift trains its models on your own events; SEON keeps case management on its Premium plan. Both run device and network checks as part of that. Neither has a self-serve checkout; SEON publishes its Starter price, Sift publishes none.

Order fraud and chargebacks: Kount and Forter

If you take card payments online and your chargeback rate is the number you answer for, start here. Both score the order at checkout against a large merchant network. They differ on liability. Kount leaves a chargeback on an approved order with you and sells tools to prevent and fight disputes; Forter sells contracts with cover and without. Merchants who want the loss taken off their books look at guarantee vendors (see the FAQ below).

More in this category: Kount alternatives, Forter alternatives and Signifyd alternatives.

Signup and login protection: Castle

Fake signups, credential stuffing and takeover are attacks on accounts, not orders. Castle is the vendor closest in shape to Maskbreak, so this is the comparison to open if you are choosing between the two.

Or see Castle alternatives. If you know the attack but not the vendor, the fraud playbooks start from the attack instead, from fake signups to account takeover.

Bot management and challenges: Arkose Labs

Arkose Labs makes risky sessions solve a puzzle. That pays off when bot volume is high enough to justify the friction for the real people who get challenged.

See Arkose Labs alternatives, and our guides for DataDome, HUMAN Security, Cloudflare Turnstile, reCAPTCHA, hCaptcha and Friendly Captcha. The case for checking without a puzzle: bot detection without CAPTCHA.

Where Maskbreak fits among them

Maskbreak judges the visit itself, not an address or an order. A script on your signup, login or checkout page collects two tokens; your server sends them in one call to POST /v1/evaluate and gets back allow, review or block, a 0–100 risk score and the reasons.

The reasons cover VPN, proxy, Tor, cloud server, browser automation, emulators and fake (antidetect) browsers, with the VPN or proxy service named when known. A VPN on its own is flagged for review, not blocked.

Its Free plan includes 10,000 visitor checks a month, every signal included and no card; paid plans start at €29 a month. It does not score orders, carry chargebacks, verify identity documents or pool data across customers; for those jobs the tools above remain the answer, and Maskbreak can run in front of them at signup and login.

Example response: the public VPN sample, trimmed to the fields that matter here. It is synthetic, not a visitor record, and you can fetch the full version at GET /v1/evaluate/sample?scenario=vpn. The VPN alone would score 35; this exit also sits on a cloud server, which adds 30, and the decision stays review because neither signal is a block on its own.

Every real response also reports its own processing time in evaluated_in_ms, and /status publishes measured figures. The quickstart has the browser snippet and the server call, and device fingerprinting vs IP intelligence explains why the two layers catch different things.

How we write these comparisons

Every vendor fact on this page comes from that vendor's own site, documentation, changelog or press release, or from a public filing, and was checked in September 2026; the Arkose Labs lines were checked against arkoselabs.com. Third-party figures, such as Vendr's buyer data on Sift, are named and dated. A vendor's own performance claims are quoted as its claims, never as ours. Two linked head-to-heads, Maskbreak vs Forter and Maskbreak vs Arkose Labs, were last reviewed in July 2026; where they differ from this page, this page is the newer check.

We make Maskbreak, so read us as biased. To keep that in check, every comparison says where the other tool is the better pick, and "not documented" in a table means we could not find it in public material, not that the vendor cannot do it. You will not find a Maskbreak detection rate here, because none has been measured. Spotted something out of date? Write to support@maskbreak.com and we will correct it.

Questions people ask when comparing fraud APIs

Which fraud detection APIs publish their pricing?

Of the vendors compared here, IPQS, MaxMind minFraud, Fingerprint and Castle publish their self-serve prices. IPQS and Fingerprint quote Enterprise separately, Castle lists Enterprise from $4,000 a month, and MaxMind negotiates volume discounts through sales. SEON publishes its Starter plan at $699 a month. Sift, Kount, Forter and Arkose Labs price through sales. Maskbreak publishes its plans too: Free with 10,000 visitor checks a month and no card, then Starter at €29, Growth at €99 and Scale at €299 a month, excluding VAT; Enterprise starts at €990 a month.

Which fraud tools offer a chargeback guarantee?

Signifyd and Riskified back the orders they approve; ClearSale does on its Growth plans and Wyllo (formerly NoFraud) on its guarantee tiers, and Forter offers contracts with or without chargeback cover. What is covered varies, so check whether it is fraud-only and whether payouts come as cash or account credit. Kount and Sift offer no guarantee: Kount sells chargeback prevention and recovery tools, and Sift feeds your chargeback data into its models. Maskbreak has no guarantee either; it checks the visit, not the order.

What is the difference between an IP reputation API and a live-visit check?

An IP reputation API scores an address you send it, so it works on logs, lists and server-side events with no browser involved. A live-visit check runs a script in the visitor's browser and weighs the connection together with the device, which is what surfaces automation and fake browsers. Maskbreak's bare-IP lookup covers only Tor exits and published cloud ranges; its VPN and proxy verdicts, with the service named when known, need the live visit.

Is there a free fraud detection API?

Several have a free way in. Maskbreak's Free plan includes 10,000 visitor checks a month, with every signal included and no card. IPQS has a free plan of 1,000 lookups a month, Fingerprint 1,000 web and iOS API calls a month, and Castle a $5 monthly budget meant for evaluation. MaxMind offers a minFraud trial of up to 1,000 queries on request, and SEON a trial on application.

Can I run Maskbreak alongside Sift, Kount or Forter?

Yes. Maskbreak checks the visit at signup and login and answers allow, review or block with the reasons, while your existing platform keeps scoring orders and payments with its own models and network. Maskbreak has no order scoring, chargeback cover or cross-customer network, so it adds to those tools rather than replacing them. Start in watch mode: log Maskbreak's decision next to what your current tool said, and change nothing until you have compared the two. The Sift, Kount and Forter comparisons cover where each overlaps.

The fastest comparison is your own traffic.
