2026 Comparison

Maskbreak vs Forter

Forter decides on online orders and payments, mainly for mid-market and enterprise merchants, and can take the chargebacks on orders it approves if you sign a covered contract. Maskbreak does a narrower job: it checks the visit behind a signup, login or checkout for VPNs, proxies, Tor, automation and fake browsers, and returns allow, review or block with reasons, with a Free plan of 10,000 visitor checks a month. The two do different jobs, and Maskbreak can sit in front of Forter rather than replace it.

Last reviewed: September 2026. The Forter facts on this page come from forter.com (its homepage, fraud-management page, company page and its own comparison FAQ), checked on 24 September 2026. Figures such as the size of the Forter Network are Forter’s own claims, not something we verified. We make Maskbreak, so expect a bias toward our own product; neither product was benchmarked for this page. “Not itemised” means we could not find it in Forter’s public material, not that Forter cannot do it. What is Forter?

Forter is a private fraud platform for online merchants, based in New York and founded by Michael Reitblat and Liron Damri. It decides on orders and payments in real time: its fraud-management page says it analyses “identity, behavioral, device, and payment signals” across cards, wallets, BNPL, ACH, gift cards and alternative payment methods, drawing on the Forter Network, which Forter puts at “2 billion+ identities across 250,000+ storefronts”. Its homepage now leads with Forter Agents (Analytics, Payments, Dispute, Abuse and Integration) and agentic-commerce work, including the MIT-licensed Trusted Agentic Commerce Protocol, and names Wayfair, Instacart and Adidas among its network brands. On liability, Forter’s own FAQ says it offers both covered and uncovered agreements and lets customers move between them.

What Maskbreak checks at checkout

Maskbreak never sees the basket or the card. It looks at the visit that submits the form: whether the address is a VPN, a proxy, a Tor exit or a cloud server, and whether the browser is automated, an emulator or a fake (antidetect) browser. A VPN on its own is flagged for review. A proxy, Tor, automation, an emulator or browser tampering blocks by default. You can change the action for most signals on the Rules tab. A rule changes the decision only for the signal it names, so relaxing one never lets a different signal through. Example response for a checkout submitted from a fake browser behind a residential proxy:

{
  "decision": "block",
  "risk_score": 100,
  "reasons": ["proxy_detected", "antidetect_browser"],
  "network": { "vpn": false, "proxy": true, "datacenter": false, "tor": false, "residential": false, "service": null },
  "device": { "antidetect": true, "automation": false, "emulator": false, "tampering_score": 0.8 }
}

Your server reads decision before the order goes to Forter or your payment provider, and keeps the reasons in its own log. Start in watch mode: log the decision, always continue, and enforce once the log looks right.

Where Forter is the better choice
  • Covered or uncovered contracts, and you can move between them (Forter’s FAQ)
  • Approval and chargeback rates guaranteed in the contract, per Forter
  • Payment decisions across cards, wallets, BNPL, ACH and gift cards
  • A cross-merchant network Forter puts at 2 billion+ identities across 250,000+ storefronts
  • Agentic-commerce tooling: Forter Agents and the MIT-licensed TACP
Where Forter is a harder fit
  • No published price: forter.com/pricing redirects to a Contact Sales form
  • No self-serve key or free tier that we could find
  • Built around online commerce (orders, payments, disputes, abuse); without a storefront, check the fit with Forter first

When to use Forter, when to use Maskbreak

Use Forter if...
  • You run an online store at mid-market or enterprise scale and want a vendor to carry chargebacks on approved orders
  • You want approval and chargeback rates guaranteed in the contract
  • You need decisions on the payment itself: cards, wallets, BNPL, ACH, gift cards
Use Maskbreak if...
  • You need a check on the visit at signup, login, checkout or a bonus claim, not an order score
  • You want a free key today and a first integration in watch mode
  • You want reason codes you can route on (vpn_detected, proxy_detected, antidetect_browser)
  • You already run Forter or a payment provider and want a network and device check in front of it
  • Your product is not a store: SaaS, fintech signups, gaming

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Maskbreak replace Forter?

Not as a like-for-like swap. Forter decides on orders and payments and can take chargeback liability; Maskbreak checks the visit (network and browser) and returns allow, review or block with reasons. It never sees the order or the card and offers no chargeback cover. If you mainly need to stop proxies, bots and fake browsers at signup or login, Maskbreak does that job, on a Free plan of 10,000 visitor checks a month or a paid plan from €29 a month. For order screening and liability, keep Forter or a similar platform.

Does Forter guarantee chargebacks?

Optionally. Forter’s own FAQ says it offers both covered agreements, where Forter covers chargebacks, and uncovered ones, and lets customers move between the two over time. Separately, Forter says it contractually guarantees approval and chargeback rates. Checked on forter.com in September 2026.

How much does Forter cost?

Forter does not publish a price. In September 2026 forter.com/pricing redirected to a Contact Sales form, and we found no public rate card. Because it offers covered and uncovered contracts, ask sales to quote both. Maskbreak publishes its prices: the Free plan includes 10,000 visitor checks a month with no card, and paid plans run from €29 a month (Starter, 50,000 checks) to €299 a month (Scale, 1,000,000), excluding VAT; Enterprise starts at €990 a month.

Does Maskbreak offer chargeback guarantees?

No. Maskbreak returns a decision and the evidence behind it; liability for the orders you approve stays with you or with whichever fraud or payment provider covers it. If you need a guarantee, pair Maskbreak’s visit check with a platform that sells one.

What does Forter do that Maskbreak doesn’t?

Order and payment decisions across cards, wallets, BNPL, ACH and gift cards; optional chargeback cover and contractual guarantees on approval and chargeback rates; and a cross-merchant network Forter puts at 2 billion+ identities across 250,000+ storefronts. Maskbreak has none of these. Its device linking stays inside each customer’s account, stored as one-way hashes, and it focuses on network and device checks on the visit, with a Free plan to start.
